Who is Dr. Morgenstern

Dr. Michael Morgenstern is double board certified in Neurology and Sleep Medicine and is the founder of the American Sleep Apnea Society. He is Director of the Cedarhurst Sleep Center in Long Island, New York. Dr. Morgenstern treats sleep apnea patients in private practice. He sees the deleterious impacts sleep apnea can have on people and society. But he is also a witness to the expedient benefits of treatment. Dr. Morgenstern feels passionately about the great possibility and impact that the American Sleep Apnea Society can have to prevent the individual and societal impacts of the health crisis posed by undiagnosed sleep apnea.

dr-morgensternDr. Morgenstern is the author of several peer-reviewed publications about Sleep Apnea and has been published in journals of Neurology and Sleep Medicine. He authored a medical text book chapter on sleep apnea published in 2015. He has presented on the diagnosis of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders at the 2014 American College of Chest Physicians national conference in Austin Texas. He has also published peer-reviewed articles on the relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and diabetes, risk assessments of sleep disorders in primary care utilizing computer-assisted technology and on the treatment of patients with OSA and Neuromuscular Disease.

Prior Work & Education

Dr. Morgenstern serves as a board member of Medwiser.org which he founded in 2005. It provides online educational content related to HIV/AIDS and is viewed by over 80,000 users in over 150 countries annually. Dr. Morgenstern received his M.D. from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed internship training in Internal Medicine at Queens Hospital Center, a division of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Morgenstern then completed his Neurology residency at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He remained at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, where he completed a fellowship in Sleep Medicine.

Current work

Dr. Morgenstern shares his time between the American Sleep Apnea Society and private practice. He is currently an attending physician at Five Towns Neurology where he sees patients with neurological conditions such as headache, dizziness, seizure, stroke, back pain and other chronic pain conditions. He also serves as the Director of the Cedarhurst Sleep Center, a division of the Neurology group. He spends lot of time seeing patients with sleep disorders such as snoring, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, sleep walking, other parasomnias and, of course, sleep apnea.

Every day the consequences of sleep apnea grow. Thousands of Motor vehicle accidents every year, train derailments and other disasters are attributable to sleep apnea. These and other health consequences like heart attack and stroke can be prevented through education, recognition and early treatment of sleep apnea.
